Pyrolysis is an important fossil energy and resource conversion technology. It is widely used in the processing of fossil resources such as coal, oil shale and oil sands.Microwave pyrolysis is an emerging pyrolysis technology. As its unique heating characteristics and the influence on the product's properties and distribution, microwave pyrolysis has gain great attention. In this study,we used intermittent microwave and fixed bed pyrolysis device to explored the pyrolysis products distribution mechanism which influenced by microwave and its potential application.Firstly, thermogravimetric analysis was conducted to study the thermal decomposition behaviors of Indonesian oil sands. The influence of different heating rates and final temperatures was also studied. The results showed that the pyrolysis process of Indonesian oil sands was divided into three stages. As the heating rate increases, the weight loss rate curve showed a trend shifting to the right, indicating that the heating rate has a certain influence on the pyrolysis characteristics. In order to achieve a relatively high yield of liquid product by microwave pyrolysis, the experiments were first conducted using three different pyrolysis methods and the pyrolysis operating conditions were further optimizes.Different liquid product yields using different pyrolysis methods were caused by different vapor residence time. The yields of liquid products were higher using pyrolysis under nitrogen and vacuum pyrolysis.Compared with conventional heating,a heat-mass transfer model proposal was put forward to demonstrate the microwave induced pyrolysis process and its influence on higher liquid yield and the reduction of second crack reaction by the same direction of heat-mass transfer. The product yields distribution and characterization were investigated, which showed the increase of liquid product yield at same heating rate by microwave irradiation. Moreover, microwave enhanced the relative volatility of high polarity substances such as oxy-organics and aromatic hydrocarbon.Microwave irradiation is beneficial for the enrichment of high-added products.
