Under the dual pressure of slope instability and ecological damage, doing a good job in slope protection has become one of the important measures to ensure project quality and restore ecology. With the advancement of technology and accumulation of experience, slope protection technology has developed into two types of engineering slope protection and ecological slope protection.During the construction period, both slope protection technologies will involve the consumption of resources and energy and the release of the environment. How to quantify energy consumption and environmental impact is of great significance for the sustainable development and green development of slope protection projects.Life cycle assessment,as the most potential environmental management tool in the 21 st century, can effectively solve this problem and provide decision-making for the choice of slope protection technology. This article takes the new honeycomb ecological slope protection and the traditional concrete slope protection as examples, and uses the life cycle assessment method to conduct a comparative study on the environmental impact loads of the two slope protection construction periods, and analyzes the reasons for the differences.Based on the final results of the life cycle assessment,it provides reasonable and feasible suggestions for the selection of slope protection for subsequent engineering practice and for reducing the environmental load during construction period.According to the inventory analysis results of life cycle assessment, the main energy input for building a 1000m2 honeycomb ecological slope protection and concrete slope protection are crude oil and hard coal, respectively, and the most prominent environmental release is CO2.The CO2 emission of concrete slope protection is 6.54 times that of the honeycomb ecological slope protection.According to the CML2001 environmental impact assessment model, quantify the six environmental impacts of global warming, acidification, eutrophication, photochemical oxidation, fossil energy consumption and human toxicity during the construction of slope protection, and the total environmental impact indexes of the honeycomb ecological slope protection construction period and the concrete slope protection construction period are 9.35×10-10 and 2.01×10-9,respectively.The stages that contributed the most to the total environmental impact of the two slope protection construction periods were the laying of the nest and the construction of concrete, accounting for 83.33% and 94.90%,respectively.In addition, the two main types of environmental impacts generated during the construction of slope protection are ADP fossil and GWP.By comparison, the total environmental impact index of the honeycomb ecological slope protection construction period is 44.18% of the concrete slope protection construction period, and the six environmental impacts of the honeycomb ecological slope protection construction period are significantly lower than the concrete slope protection construction period. The reason for the large gap is that the environmental impacts of the two raw materials of honeycomb cells and concrete during production and transportation are quite different.Among them, the environmental impact of production and transportation of honeycomb cells is 41.32% and 0.5% of concrete, respectively.Based on the results of life cycle assessment,in order to vigorously promote the construction of ecological civilization, this article recommends that the honeycomb ecological slope protection is preferred for slope protection. This slope protection can save energy consumption and reduce emissions, and has good ecological and economic benefits. In addition,in order to reduce the environmental load during the construction of concrete slope protection,we can start with the use of green building materials and rational planning of transportation routes.
