Cultural construction and ecological civilization construction are two important dimensions of the overall layout of “a five-pronged approach”,social capital plays an important role in both aspects.Based on the production-pollution model of Copeland and Taylor, this paper develops a mathematical model in which we examine the effect of cultural diversity and social capital on pollution emissions. Then, based on the provincial panel data of China from 2008 to 2016,this paper constructs the mediating effect model of “cultural diversity→social capital→and environmental pollution” and explores the mechanism by which dialect diversity affects pollution emissions.Through the derivation of the model and economic analysis, the hypothesis of this paper is proposed. The results show that the indirect impact of two mediating paths is significant through social trust and social networks.Specifically, one path is to suppress pollution emissions by suppressing the formation of social trust, and the other is to promote pollution emissions by inhibiting the formation of social networks. In general, the diversity of dialects is not conducive to pollution control. The policy implications are that while promoting cultural diversification and ecological civilization construction in the future,we should pay attention to the cultivation of social capital, especially social networks, and we should strengthen communication and exchanges between areas, reduce the negative influence of cultural diversity,to give full play to the important role of social capital in pollution control and resolve the contradiction between them.
