In practical applications, the coalescing filter element for screw compressors has problems in terms of filtration efficiency, operating life and operating cost. Therefore,it is of great significance to develop a coalescing filter element for a screw compressor. The influence of number of filter layers and composite filters on filtration performance of filter elements were studied experimentally.Four kinds of filter materials were selected, and the layer number gradient experiments were carried out to obtain the optimal number of layers.Under the optimal number of layers, the filter materials were combined to form a filter, and the best composite filter was selected;comparison tests were conducted between the composite filters and the normal. The results show that the number of filter layers is in the range of 10?18 layers. The efficiency increases slowly with the increase of the number of layers. The quality factor increases first and then decreases. Therefore, the filter should not be wrapped with too many layers. In this experiment,12 layers is an ideal number. The pore size directly affects the efficiency of the filter.Whether it is lipophilic, even if the filter with large-pore has more layers,it still cannot effectively filter small droplets. In the composite filter experiment, filter with increasing pore shows better filtration performance regardless of the lipophilicity. The pressure drop, efficiency and quality are better than those of the single filter. The combination of large-pore lipophilic and small-pore oleophobic filter has better filtration performance than ordinary filter elements under three variables: air volume, viscosity and concentration. It is hoped that the study will have guiding significance on developing high efficiency coalescence filters.
