It is said that glass-making technology is originated from the Phoenicians.Based on the ancient Phoenician and Egyptian glass manufacturing, the glass-making technology in the Middle East gradually developed, where it progressed through mainly three phases chronologically,i.e.Roman times,Sassanid Persian times and Islamic times.Building on the artistry and style of the previous two predecessors,Islamic glass is critical to the development of glass production by establishing the basis for modern-day glasses, such as Venetian glass.Islamic glass featured in the land-based and Maritime Silk Road, bearing witness to the exchanges materially and culturally between the west and the east.Ancient documents and unearthed cultural relics revealed that Islamic glass was brought to the east, especially in China, through trade and tributary between late Tang Dynasty and mid Ming Dynasty, reflecting its value and status as an important commodity in ancient Middle East. The emergence of Islamic glass in China enriched people's lives. The advanced technique that came with it also inspired the making of Chinese ceramics in different shapes and decorative styles.
