Research On The Development Countermeasures For The Electrical Energy Industry In Benin

Electricity is very important for the development of a country.The availability of electricity underlies the provision of essentials services such as education,bringing light to schools and homes,food safety through refrigeration.In Benin electricity energy is supply by the state owned company SBEE which,in conjunction with Benin Electric Community(CEB)are helping in its management.One of the priorities of the Beninese Electricity Company(SBEE),is to provide sufficient and accessible electricity for the entire population of Benin.For this reason,Benin has implemented development strategies to increase its electricity production.However,it still seems to have difficulties in achieving this goal.The current environment is marked by a national energy crisis.Beninese citizens face repeated power cuts.Domestic energy supply is falling dramatically.Benin is thus veiled in a great insecurity for its supply of electrical energy.This study first made a SWOT assessment of the Electricity sub-sector in Benin to determine the problems that hinder its power generation efficiency.This assessment revealed a strong dependence on electricity imports from neighbouring countries such as Ghana,Cote d'Ivoire and Nigeria and thus a low production at national level.Secondly,evaluated energy production through a survey and statistical analysis;finally estimated the national exponential demand.The results showed that Benin makes very little use of the available renewable energy potential and a low level of mobilization of financial resources.Additionally,a comparative study analysis was made between the current total Energy Production(GWh)and the Total Energy Supply by the company.Afterward analysed the difference between the Total Energy Supply and the total energy Demand by the population.These analyses lead to determine the Energy Demand function that could be used as tool by SBEE to forecast the needs of the population for the eight coming years.This reveals that Benin has to diversify its sources of production by including the exploitation of renewable energies such as solar energy and wind energy.Benin has to make a strong institutional organization,to build up the public-private partnerships and make a favourable regulatory level in the electricity sub-sector.
