Philip Johnson is one of the most influential architects in the 20th century in the United States.He not only has outstanding contributions to his personal architectural practice,but also plays an important role in the promotion and development of American architectural thought.His architectural works are just like his living conditions,full of exploration and reshaping,but these practices all show the rational return and creation.Philip Johnson’s rich and extraordinary expressiveness and creativity have made him shuttle through various architectural styles,including the Glass House-representative works of modernism,Pre-Columbian art Gallery-neo-classical climax,and Pennzoil Palace-the excellence production of late modernism,and when post-modernism became fashionable,he and John Burgee contributed the AT&T Building in New York.Through systematic analysis of Philip Johnson and his works as far as possible to allow readers to clearly understand the historical environment of Philip Johnson’s practice;Analyze the intrinsic reasons why its architectural style can stand out in the complicated trend,and strive to objectively interpret the ideas behind the works and restore the truth of the architecture;Comment on the guiding role and significance of its innovative exploration spirit in our today’s construction practice.This article is divided into three parts:The first part is the first chapter of this article,mainly expounding the research background,purpose and significance of the article,research status and research methods at home and abroad.The second part is the main part of the article,which contains second to fifth chapters of the article:The second chapter focuses on the analysis of Philip Johnson’s living environment and creation background,so that we can more clearly understand the source of architectural ideas and the causes of architectural styles;The third chapter analyzes Philip Johnson’s works in the process of exploration of architectural styles in different periods,thinking about the process of "returning to himself’ in architecture,and expounding the logic of personal ideas and themes in the changing works;The forth chapter selects Philip Johnson’s four representative projects in important stages of his career,through the analysis of his creation’s background,it focuses on interpreting his design philosophy,performance techniques,and social influence,from the perspective of "Exploring New Styles-Returning to the Origin-Innovative Practices",we analyze the application and artistic treatment of architectural forms,functions,technologies,and space in different stages.The fifth chapter discusses the impact of Philip Johnson on American architecture and its implications for contemporary architectural practice.The third part is the conclusion:Summing up Philip Johnson’s influence and design concept in the architectural,and based on our country’s national conditions,discusses its idea of "changing" and "invariable" in the architectural concept for reference to the development of our country’s architecture.
