The process of urbanization has contributed a lot to the development of economy and the improvement of people's living conditions. At the same time, the changes brought by it in the natural environment and pattern of cities has also given rise to a series of urban hydrological effects, and problems like falling water tables, water shortage, water logging after heavy rainfall, and water pollution have become increasingly prominent.Residential area is the "skeleton" of a city, which shows the city's functionality.Consequently, the collection and utilization of rainwater in residential area and its effects will have a great impact on the development of residential area and even the whole city. With the boom of sponge cities, sponge residential area is to apply low-impact facilities in the planning and construction of residential areas based on theories related to landscape ecology and water ecology on the condition that the suitability of turing the existing residential area into sponge one is fully considered. This can help protect water quality, save water resources, and form a sustainable water cycle in the residential area. This paper mainly focuses on construction and reconstruction of sponge residential areas. In order to guarantee the scientific nature and integrity of the study, the author has been adhering to the principle of "finding the problem, analyzing it,and solving it" during the planning and construction.First of all,the domestic and foreign research results associated with sponge residential area were consulted to learn and borrow advanced low-impact technical measures. Moreover, based on the theories of storm water management and landscape ecology,an in-depth analysis was conducted on the present situation and problems of the rainwater collection and utilization in China's development of residential areas so as to find out the shortage of rainwater management.Start from this point, the author analyzes the characteristics and development goals of sponge residential areas and introduces the technical measures from three processing stages of source, midway, and terminal.Meanwhile, based on the analysis of the principle and suitability of sponge residential areas' construction, basic contents of residential areas' construction are proposed, including functional layout, optimization of road and building, and green landscape.Later, the safeguards which are used to guarantee the smooth progress andstable operation of sponge residential areas are discussed on the point of the government, designer and residents. Finally, taking the sponge residential area transformation of the1 st phase of Shiji Longting Community in Tangshan as an example, the author took into consideration the geography, climate and the current situation of the community to determine the resource conditions of the transformation. The sponge residential area transformation of the 1st phase of Shiji Longting Community was carried out in four aspects: the layout of low-impact development facilities, optimal design of roads, buildings and landscape. After the transformation,it successfully solved the problems existing in its rainwater management. It was concluded that the development of sponge residential areas should start from the suitability of the residential area's actual situation, reasonably apply the advanced low-impact development technologies in each unit, and connect roads, buildings and landscapes to form a systematic rainwater management system while following the principle of rationality. In addition,it also proves that the theories mentioned in this paper are rational and practical, which provides future residential areas with an effective rainwater management method.
