Frederick Steiner is one of the most active frontier landscape planners in contemporary landscapes field.Frederick Steiner(later referred to as Steiner),present dean of the Design School at University of Pennsylvania(later referred to as Penn),has made outstanding contributions to landscape education. At the same time,Steiner has combined scientific research with practice, which he calls reflective practice. He has participated in landscape planning all over the world, using human ecology knowledge and related disciplines to solve urban problems.Because of his dual status as researcher and landscape planner, his landscape planning ideas, methods and practices have strong guidance in numerous landscape planning. This article starts with Frederick Steiner’s solution to comprehensive and complex relationship between people and the environment in post-industrial era.His concept of human ecology landscape planning, mainly includes three core aspects, nested network, nature and human process, and site regeneration. This concept has contributed to solving the relationship between human beings and nature, which is the most prominent issue of culture and ecology in landscape planning ways. The main source of nested network in human ecology is the scale theory in ecology.Steiner put forward six scales of human ecology, which are based on landscape ecology scale theory and John Lyle scale theory, criticizing the scale defects theory of Ian Mc Harg(1920-2001).The human ecology system is organized in layers, communicating through the feedback network.Steiner also came up with a new viewpoint,‘global thinking, regional research, local action’,in order to help landscape planners understand the human ecology system more effectively. The main source of the nature process and the human process of the concept of human ecology is the traditional ecological planning.Based on the inheritance of Mc Harg’s nature process theory, the supplement of horizontal ecological flow, and the critique of nature and urban dualism,Frederick Steiner put forward the method of integrating the nature and human.By conforming and perfecting the nature process, the human process, the continuation of the nature process, the perfection of the human ecology process and the interweaving of the nature process and the human process are realized. The main source of site regeneration in the concept of human ecology is the extension of traditional sustainable thinking in the face of the current urban issues.Frederick Steiner, based on the reflection and enlightenment of traditional sustainable thinking,Mc Harg’s nature ecology, and John Lyle’s theory of regenerative design, helps establish the SITES sustainable site assessment systemapproach to guide landscape design to reproductive design development, creation of renewable systems and resilience training to ensure future resource availability and mitigation of climate change, change markets through design, development and maintenance practices, enhance human well-being and enhance community building. In the conclusion part,it summarizes the human ecology concept of Frederick Steiner. In a pluralistic era of cultural background and issues,Frederick Steiner’s comprehensive and unique operation practices in terms of culture and ecology,as well as the scale nested network, nature process and human process,Regeneration of the site presented in his reflective practice. With more unique, systematic and objective research results,it summarizes the perspectives, methods and ideas of contemporary cutting-edge landscape planning practice more comprehensively and valuablely.
