Urban space should not be purely engineered and only technological efficient. It should also be a space for human growth and human interaction.--------Jane JacobsReviewing the wave of global development, the fanatical worship of motorization has gradually receded. The growing demand for humanized urban space and the criticism of motorized development have led to an increasingly prosperous for walking, and attributes of publicity of pedestrain space have been re-recognized.On the other hand, the old city renewal, which has been leaded by the market mechanism, caused a series of problems such as the original structure destruction, the space fragmentation, the lack of public space, the loose of features and humanity to the space and so on.Additionally, the demand of motorization in the old city central area not only dismember the spatial structure dominated by the original walking, but also erodes the daily space. The motorization has led to a huge deviation in updating goals of the old city center area.Focused on the increasingly difficult situations of the old city’s renewal, the concept of "city betterment" has provided new development ideas to the old city renewal.Taking the pedestrian network as an entry point, the paper rethinks the relationship between the pedestrain network and the old city central area, then combines the patching design methods of “city betterment” to study the renewal of the old city center area.By this way the “pedestrian netwok betterment” has been proposed for the city renewal, which is more suitable for the old city center area.Reviewing the evolution and the theoretical development of the pedestrain network, the western region has undergone three stages: the complete stage, the fragmentation stage, and the restructuring stage.Among these three stages, the pedestrian network influences the spatial form and social life of the old city center area.It is not only the spatial structure of center area, but also an important means of redevelopment in old city center area. The development of the pedestrian network in old citiy center area in China is still at an turning point in the process of network fragmentation to restructuring.During this period three levels have been experienced, including research transformation, policy transformation, and demand evolution. It has gradually realized the importance of pedestrian network, and focus on the attributes of publicity and humanity of the net(Chapter 2).As the space skeleton and daily life spatial media, the pedestrain network has great adaptability and humanity.Urban design which focus on public space quality and microcosmic perception of people should change the design focus of the old city center area. With the concepts of humanity orientation, the process of space repairation, and the means of multi-view integration to reshape the old city center. On the basis of the concepts, three major urban design strategies are proposed, including model transformation, network repair, and element coupling(Chapter 3).Further,take Honghuagang District of Zunyi City as a design object to study the design strategies and methods of “pedestrian network betterment”.First, the overall background of the old city center area in Honghuagang District should be known deeply to understand the characteristics, the complex issues and the reality contradictions of the old city(Chapter 4).Second,besides the overall cognition,a detailed spatial traits of Honghuagang central area had been analyzed from four aspects: pedestrian network pattern,auto-traffic system, functional layout, and street-level interfaces(Chapter 5).Last,combined universal strategies(Chapter 3)with the characteristics of Honghuagang central area, six major urban design strategies have been formed to renewal the old city central area, including basic network construction, network symbiosis, compound utilization, and open space design methods and so on(Chapter 6).Finally the article summarizes the necessity of “pedestrian network betterment” in the old city center area renewal, and points out the inadequacies and further research of the article(Chapter 7).
