As one of the most important visual elements of digital interface,icon has become the link between user and computer system.Users interact with the computer system by recognizing,understanding and memorizing icons in the digital interface.Therefore,the study of icon cognition and working memory is beneficial to the evaluation and improvement of the cognitive efficiency of the digital interface icon elements.The study can also help to improve the user's working memory capacity when using the digital interfaces.Based on the theoretical research of icons cognitive characteristics analysis,information cognitive processing theory,working memory dual coding theory and feature binding memory model,the effect of the factors such as icons cognitive characteristics,memory task types and icon visual characteristics have been researched by using ERP electroencephalogram technology.The main research work of this article is as follows:(1)According to cognitive psychology,the process of icon cognition has been studied.It summarizes the influencing factors in the process of icon cognition.It also summarizes the cognitive characteristics of icon in digital interface and explores the correlation between cognitive properties.And then,according to the working memory model,the processing and coding mode of icons in working memory is also been studied.And and according to the dual coding theory and the characteristic binding memory theory,the impact of design style,cognitive characteristics and color design to working memory encoding and feature binding has been studied.(2)In the ERP experiment of icon working memory,the influence of icon cognitive characteristics and memory task types on user working memory is studied by using the change detection paradigm of single stimulus detection.It is found that the change of memory task has a significant effect on the latency of P300 EEG.It is proved that users will adopt different memory codes according to the memory tasks.When the memory item is an icon figure,the user will use double coding to memorize,while the memory item is the icon semantics,which mainly uses the speech coding memory.And in semantic memory tasks,the specificity of icons has a significant effect on P300 amplitude.The P300 amplitude of the abstract icon group is significantly higher than that of the concrete icon group,indicating that the lower the specificity of the icon is,the higher user's cognitive load is in the semantic memory task.(3)In the ERP experiment of remembering icon feature binding,the influence of icon visual features on user working memory is studied by using the change detection paradigm of single stimulus detection.The P300 amplitude in the feature binding memory task is significantly greater than the amplitude of the single feature memory task,indicating that the visual features of each dimension in the icon can be binded in working memory,but need to occupy additional cognitive resources.The latency of the semantic color binding memory task is significantly later than the shape color binding memory,which proves that the users mainly use the speech coding memory in the semantic bundling memory.The ERP method proposed in this paper provides a new method for the study of the cognitive and memory of icons.The experimental results provide a theoretical basis for the design and evaluation of the digital interface icons and their visual features,which can help designers to design and optimize the icons.
