Abstract/Summary:
Chinese classical gardens have complex and extensive meaning. As a cultural projection behind the space, gender factor is often of great significance to the production of space.Generally, garden space is often the externalization of social relations throughout the ages, and the gender attribute of space also produced by the development of traditional culture of Chinese feudal society. The traditional gender relationship of male superiority is strongly reflected in every level of material space. However, for a long time, garden space has been described or set as a neutral or gender-free existence, which is not in line with historical facts. At the same time, scholars are constantly pursuing the significance of space in the study of garden, and exploring the connection between garden space and society, history and human being is the core of interpreting spatial significance. The formation of the connection between women and garden space is attribute to the effect of female physiology and psychology on the construction of the garden space.More importantly, female social attributes and social relationships are characterized by the garden space.Hence, garden space has a more profound spatial significance as the basis of the characterization of material and social relationships. Therefore, examining the deeper meaning of garden space from the perspective of women can make up for the shortcomings in the study of traditional garden history to depict a more comprehensive scene. In this work, the interaction between Jiangnan garden space and women in the Ming and Qing Dynasties is studied based on the perspective of women using literature research method.Firstly, the formation and development of gender pattern and the representation methods of gender ethics in garden space is examined from the aspect of social relationship, and then the gender meaning of Jiangnan garden space in Ming and Qing dynasties is elucidated from the representation of order in the garden space, the definition of social identity on the space of women’s activities and the influence of social aesthetics on the characteristics of women’s space.Secondly, the interaction between Jiangnan garden space and women is examined from the female life, the female body and the femininity, and the wisdom of women in space practice such as construction, management, touring and appreciating of garden and its influence on garden space are explored from the aspect of social activities.Based on the above research, the interaction between women and garden space is summarized based on the dialectical relationship between society and space, and the generation mechanism of garden space is explored from the perspective of women. Finally,The Couple’s Garden Retreat is studied from the perspective of women using the case analysis method and the field investigation method.By exploring the interrelationship between ancient women and garden space, the influence of women on the construction of garden space can be studied from complicated spatial meanings. The more important intention of integrating these fragmented interrelationships is to emphasize the differences, which are really existed, nonnegligible parts of the traditional garden space research, and the key to solve contradiction between women and space in contemporary life.
