Insulators are important electrical equipment for the transmission lines. They play a significant role as the mechanical support parts and insulator parts in protecting the safe operation of electric power system. The voltage level of transmission lines are becoming higher and higher with the development of power grid technology, and the performance requirement of insulators also getting higher and higher. At present, environment problems are allow of no optimist. The safe operation of power system is threaten by the air pollution and natural calamities.Pollution flashover of insulators is an important cause of the large-scale blackout.Base on this, the contamination characteristics of insulators are studied from different angles in combination with simulation and experiment, and the results have certain guiding significance for external insulation configuration of transmission linesFirstly, this paper chose the HVDC transmission lines in Henan Province as the research object, the natural contamination experiment of XP-70 insulators is carried out,and the pollution data of XP-70 insulators are obtained.Using the Romanov benchmark to eliminate the abnormal values in the contamination data, the analysis shows that the contamination amount of XP-70 insulator increases under live condition, the equivalent salt density increases by 1.42 times and the non-soluble density increases by 1.21 times, and the accumulative speed of contamination on the lower surface of insulator is faster than upper surface; Then, the contamination data of AC transmission line insulators are analyzed, and the contamination characteristics of XWP2-70?XWP2-100/160??FC70P?FC160P-170??CA-160?CA-872EZ/155?and FC160PH are obtained. The results show that XWP2-70 is the least polluted insulator compared with the other four insulators; Finally, the three-dimensional model of XWP2-100/160 insulator is established by Pro/E software. The three-dimensional model is imported into Fluent software to establish the simulation wind tunnel model. The boundary conditions of the wind tunnel are set.The simulation analysis of gas-solid two-phase flow of insulator is carried out.The simulation results show that the wind speed and the diameter of contaminated particles will affect the contamination characteristics of insulator. The amount of contamination on insulator surface increases with the increase of particle size and wind speed.
