Since the publication of the first World Heritage sites in the late 1970 s,heritage tourism has been nurtured and marketed in Western countries as a new tourism product. As an important part of architectural heritage, traditional vernacular architecture is still in the stage of theoretical lag behind practice. The separation of theory and practice makes the managers and users of traditional vernacular architecture not really understand the valuable historical and cultural resources it contains. It is simply used as a tourism product as a major means of publicizing and increasing tourism revenue. As the intersection of the ancient Tea Horse Road, the Bonan Ancient Road and the “Drug Road”,Shaxi Ancient Town is also the intersection of the four major salt wells in western Yunnan. The layout of the village space, cultural relics, historical buildings of tea and horses, and the historical environment of the tea and horses are relatively well preserved, and there are preserved traditional vernacular architecture such as Kui Ge,Stage,Madian,Zhaimen,Market, and Vernacular House during the tea trade period. In recent years, with the significant increase in the popularity and reputation of Shaxi Ancient Town at home and abroad, tourism has gradually become the leading industry in Shaxi's economic development.Tourism has triggered a series of transformational phenomena such as the functions and forms of traditional local architecture, and there are also localities. The archetype of the building is derailed from the times, and the current type is out of touch with the regional culture. This thesis firstly uses the literature research methods such as literature review, field investigation and research, based on the analysis of the generation environment of traditional vernacular architecture in Shaxi Ancient Town, from the perspective of traditional residential buildings and traditional public buildings, the courtyard space, structural system and model scale. The art of decoration and decoration is analyzed to understand the basic mode of traditional vernacular architecture in Shaxi Ancient Town. After that, through the diachronic analysis and interdisciplinary analysis, the tourism adaptive transformation of the vernacular architecture of Shaxi Ancient Town was explored. The tourism adaptability transformation of vernacular architecture is mainly reflected in the spatial level of space layout, group composition, functional change, structural replacement, and non-material aspects such as the creation of skills,subject-object relationship, and social space reconstruction. In addition,in the aspect of tourism development and architectural cultural heritage protection, the effective ways of sustainable development of local architecture and tourism in cultural heritage sites and the control and guiding measures of Shaxi architectural cultural heritage protection policies are discussed. Finally, based on the exploration of vernacular architecture protection and tourism adaptive transformation design, this thesis proposes three transformation modes, including transformation(protection and utilization),reconstruction(reuse and activation)and new construction(the creation of new vernacular architecture),and their corresponding transformation principles and methods.Through the analysis of the phenomenon and problems of local architecture transformation caused by tourism,it can provide useful guidance for the planning and construction of Shaxi Ancient Town, and through the analysis of the transformation mode of the local architecture in the tourism development of Shaxi Ancient Town,it provides relevant countermeasures and suggestions for the tourism adaptive transformation of other similar ancient towns.
