Throughout the history of the car’s development in the past century,we have witnessed a car revolution from the early luxury consumer goods to the current popular means of transportation. This is the inevitable result of the rapid development of the automobile industry and the continuous expansion of the manufacturing scale.Under the impetus of the aesthetic trend in the new century, product design has been highly concerned. At the same time, the concept of automobile consumption has changed from performance-based to performance, styling and brand parallelism. The diversified demand has promoted the continuous integration and cross-border of traditional models. And styling design has gradually become an important part of automotive R&D.It is one of the important guarantees for good business benefits in the context of market segmentation. The SUV,which was born in the middle of the20 th century,is a high-end passenger car.It has the unique advantages of cars and off-road vehicles. It has become a mainstream model because of its popularity. In recent years, its market share has been rising. They have stepped into the SUV product market. The SUV follows the modern forward development of the car design process, but the design positioning and modeling of the previous research stage still occupy a lot of research and development time, slowing down the entire design progress. At the same time, there is a lack of scientific modeling design reference standards, and the direction of the empirical modeling scheme becomes blurred. The lack of clear reference and imitation leads to deviations between the body shape and consumer expectations, which limits the market sales. Therefore, the intuitive form driven by user demand will become the most valuable reference carrier in directional design. In this study, this paper attempts to use the side body of the mainstream SUV in the market as a research sample.Based on the theoretical methods and tools of perceptual engineering theory, the characteristic element solutions corresponding to the image are analyzed in the form of qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. The overall research is divided into three parts. The first part aims to obtain imagevocabulary and modeling features suitable for relevance research.Combining subjective questionnaire survey and eye tracking test, using principal component analysis and other mathematical statistics methods and referring to eye movement visual images, the key image vocabulary and visual highlighting important styling areas of SUV side styling features are obtained, which paves the way for subsequent research. The second part aims to analyze the matching relationship between the shape and image of the main main feature elements. The morphological classification and numbering of the lateral modeling feature elements are mainly carried out by linear analysis based on visual cognition theory. The lateral modeling feature set of the sample is constructed, and the correlation between the lateral characteristic elements and the key image is discussed by partial correlation analysis. Finally, the side styling features including the hood contour, the side window contour, the roof line, the waist line and the front and rear lights are highlighted, and the degree of influence of the specific element morphology corresponding to the feature on the image expression is analyzed. At the same time, the common side features are added to extend the shape set for reference as a design. The third part mainly proposes a directional body design process based on modeling-image correlation in the context of styling diversification.Based on Geely’s GE model development case, the feasibility of the process in the actual design process was verified. The directional modeling method proposed in this paper can systematically assist the designer to complete the design task and make the design product closer to the consumer’s psychological expectation. At the same time, the theoretical methods and results of this research can be extended to other models and angles to meet the design needs of diverse models.
