| The presence of material is an essential issue in the study of architecture.The conceptuality of material should be valued,in addition to the technical and constructional aspects.In order to avoid the weakening of architecture materials into the existence of pure "objects",or to stay in the simple use of image and symbolization,this paper aims to explore the presence and strategies of material based on the perspective of art and concept,closely relate the strategy of material’s construction,architectural space and the artistic concept,and establish the relationship between material expression and spatial presentation from the conceptual level.Firstly,the background of artistic concepts related to architectural representation will be illustrated.In the modern art,the impressionism searches an actual scene in visual,the Post-impressionists use the drawing elements for expression of feelings,Abstractionism focuses on the spatial relationship of the drawing elements,and the Abstract Expressionism concentrates on presenting the drawing process and visual experience.As for the contemporary art,in which a critical point is experience,develops the artistic exploration including Arte Povera,Optical Art,and Multi-media art.The interpretation of all these artistic concepts will be a fundamental research for exploring the thoughts in the presence of material.The following part will dedicate to the analysis of the presence of modern architecture materials,including the technical strategies,presentation methods,spatial expression,for exploring the thoughts behind them.It experienced a transform from the ideal reality of Structural Rationalism,to the typical reality of Gottfried Semper ’s theory,and the sensory essence of the material based on the concept of space.Then it turned to a quite abstract way to present materials which reduced the materiality in them as much as possible.After that,the construction process of material and the perception emerging from material came to an important place.The ideological connotations and artistic concepts behind these presentation strategies of material are mutually influential and isomorphic.The next portion will explore the relationship between the presence of material and contemporary art concepts through the hybrid analysis of the rationality of construction,quality of the surface,and the more important aspect: perceptual experience.For example,there could be a relationship between the Arte Povera and an original use of basic materials for perceiving them in a new way,a connection between the Optical Art and a strategy focusing on the movement and illusion in material,and an association between the Multi-media art and a presence method combining with multiple messages and media.Influenced by these contemporary artistic concepts,the presence of material developed various strategies and considerations concerning with sense and experience,in addition to the technical,constructional,and surface qualities.Through the study and analysis of specific cases,this paper aims to explore the realistic and diverse strategies on the presence of architectural material,and build the relationship with artistic concepts.Moreover,it could introduce a more sensitive way to understand and use the material in architecture practice. |
