As the environment problem and the energy crisis have already become the restriction of the development of the human society,the sustainable building has become one of the future in the field architecture,and a hotspot in such research.In the last several decades,starting from the experience of traditional buildings,architects and engineers dedicated to improve building materials and techniques,develop new technology and design strategies,meanwhile bring such development into practice,in order to promote the development of sustainable building.The procedure of “designoptimazation” in green building designing in China has promoted the development of sustainable design of all kinds of buildings in all kinds of climates.However,it has gradually made sustainable design seperated from the field of architecture design,and increasingly dominated by building technology instead.At the meantime,as the building performance simulation has gradually become the mainstream method of the research and design of sustainable building,the restriction of the technologies has already become the obstacle in the field of design.Accordingly,it is essential for the architects to integrate the technologies to architectural design,try new research methods and test them in construction,in order to improve the design in sustainable buildings.As for the buildings in an environment of hot and humid climate,the proper utility of the semi-outdoor space is always an important approach in climate adaptability design,which is for all the time emphasized by architects.Based on such design experience,the cocept of surface space can be advanced within the frame of buffer layer of biological climate,which stand for the semi-outdoor space extended from the building evenlop,with effects of improving the microclimate around the building and decreasing the energy consumption during the use of the building.Such concept may provide new methods for the design of sustainable buildings.This thesis,starting from the research of tradition buildings and case study of the masterpiece of sustainable buildings,meanwhile based on the real project in Hainan Province,proposes the concept of surface space,analyzes its mechanism,and provide a method for researching the surface space and evaluating its effect using ENVI-met.Such method is also introduced in the pre-decision in design procedure for architects,when negotiations need to be reached between the needs of architecture design and energy-saving,by which means the architects can be able to control the design better.The thesis as well researches the effect of courtyard surface space in the hot summer and warm winter area in China,with different shapes,locations,section forms,shading condition,ventilation condition,etc.,and summarize the design strategies of courtyard surface space.The final purpose of this thesis is to provide theoretical support and guide the methodology of the design of a design-dominated sustainable building.
