Nowadays, due to the depletion of coal resources in some districts and the implementation of supply-side structural reform in mining industry,a large number of coal mines have been shuttered and many mining area railway industrial relics have came into being. In the face of the contradictions of the shortage of land resources and the deterioration of ecological environment, those access railroads extend along the coal mines, stations, factories and cities in addition to those relevant buildings and facilities are seeking the opportunity of rebounding to cities rather than being forgotten or facing demolition. As an effective methodology in the renewal of cities, urban catalyst tends to minimize the intervention, emphasize the utility of new elements to influence the existing elements, stimulate and guide the subsequent development and promote the urban rehabilitation.Railway industrial relics in mining areas are unique resources for coal resource-based cities, and their renewal methods have significant impacts in this field. This paper focused on applying the theory of urban catalyst to the application strategies of the renewal of railway industrial relics in mining areas, which could explore and develop multiple values of the industrial relics and promote the transition and development of resource-based cities. This paper firstly introduced the definition of relevant concepts such as industrial relics and industrial heritages for mining area railways, then sorted out some theories and practices concerning about mining area railway industrial relics at home and abroad, and concluded their developments.Meanwhile, this paper presented the research status of the urban catalyst theory,in addition to its concept and operating principles, and proposed the application model of the catalyst renewal of the mining area railway industrial relics. Moreover, this paper discussed these in detail from three aspects, including the catalyst elements selection, catalyst construction and dynamic control and guidance.Furthermore, this paper took a deep look into the evolution of mining area railway industrial relics in Xuzhou and the renewal potential of the urban catalysts from the two aspects of historical development and spatial distribution. Finally,we chose the mining area railway industrial relics in Jiaang District,Xuzhou City as the case study. On the basis of thorough investigation, the author selected different kinds of catalyst elements, applied the catalyst construction strategies, proposed the implementation suggestions on dynamic control and renewal guidance and sequentially explored the function of the urban catalyst theory on the renewal of mining area railway industrial relics.Through all the researches in this paper, the urban catalyst theory is regarded as a new attempt for the development of mining area railway industrial relics, and is prospected to utilize as a theory reference for researches on the renewal of industrial relics for mining area railway in the future.
