In China, the population in urban area has been through a soaring rise due to the soaring increase in urbanization and large-scale urban expansion. The rapid expansion in urban area has made the urban construction come to an accelerated stage. In order to meet people's needs, new infrastructure and public service facilities have been built in the cities in the large scale,so as to accelerate the modernization construction and keep pace with the time, and create a brand new livable urban living space.Meanwhile, some inconsistency phenomena have occurred during the construction period in the city. The large-scale demolition and reconstruction has caused many problems, such as the faultage of cities history and culture, the gradual loss of cultural diversity, and the extensive usage and low efficiency of urban land.In the cities, historical and cultural blocks situated in the old parts of the city reflect the cultural landscape and local features, which is the precious historical and cultural heritage that cannot be replicated in the city again. These historical and cultural blocks are of great significance in shaping the diversified public space in the entire city. With the continuous shortcomings in the urban brought by the large-scale reconstruction, the planning method for urban development in China has gradually changed from large-scale renewal to small-scale progressive renewal, which now is guided by the daily needs of modern urban citizens. Thus, the measures adjusted to local conditions for personalized updates and protections have been implemented to the newly-constructed environment in the city. Therefore, improving the quality of the living environment of the old city blocks and activating the potential vitality of the blocks in an order development in urban space as repairing work are of great significance to the upgrading in the streets.According to the background introduced in the above, this paper takes the public space in the residential historical area in Nanjing's old city as the research object, analyzing the characteristics and problems of the internal space by means of on-site investigation. This paper is aimed to construct a set of design strategies adapted to the micro-update of public spaces in Nanjing's old city by means of analyzing the protection and renewal method of the residential historical area based on the micro-update design method. The paper includes mainly four parts:The first chapter is the introduction part that makes a clear analysis of both the concept of micro-update and public space, and introduces the research purpose, significance and necessity of this topic. Also the related research methods are explained. The second chapter explains the concept and connotation characteristics of micro-update,summarizing the practice condition of micro-update theory applied in the public space neighborhoods reconstruction both at home and abroad. And the remaining problems of the current micro-update method are concluded in this chapter. The third chapter proposes the principles, aims and countermeasures of the micro-update design strategy based on the research on the public space in the old parts of the city, with the aim to guide the application and practice in the next chapter. The fourth chapter is an empirical study, where on-site investigation and data collection on the historical and cultural blocks of Hehuatang district in Nanjing have been made. This chapter also analyzes the characteristics of blocks and its public space form in the blocks and makes problems summarization. The design strategy summarized in the previous chapters has been applied to the practice of micro-update design of public space in the old parts of the city in Nanjing. In this way,the transformation from basic theoretical research and design strategy construction to practice has been realized in this paper.Chapter five is the summary for the whole paper.
