The flower thrips Frankliniella intonsa is a major horticultural and agricultural pest, which has spread widely in China and around the world. This thrips can cause enormous economic losses. As the flower thrips breeds rapidly and has short developmental period,a single chemical control is difficult to achieve the desired effect. Some studies show that the use of aggregation pheromone is one effective measures to control thrips.(R)-lavandulyl acetate and neryl(S)-2-methylbutanoate are identified as the two main malespecific active compounds from F.intonsa.Our laboratory synthesized the two compounds.Analysis of enantiomeric composition was carried out by GC on either a BGB-176SE column for(R)-lavandulyl acetate,or a CP-chirasil-Dex CB column for neryl(S)-2-methybutanoate.Moreover,the efficiency of the active chemicals in enhancing effect of the flower thrips in the laboratory was tested. The main results are as follows:1 Neryl(S)-2-methybutanoate had identical retention times on nonpolar and polar GC columns to one of the main natural peak, and the mass spectra were superimposable. In the same way,(R)-lavandulyl acetate had identical retention times on nonpolar and polar GC columns to another of the main natural peak, and the mass spectra were superimposable, which illustrate the target compound was synthesized successfully.2 Attractiveness of neryl(S)-2-methylbutanoate and(R)-lavandulyl acetate synthetics were tested in a Y-tube olfactometer. The results showed that neryl(S)-2-methylbutanoate synthetics alone was attractive to female F.whose active range is 0.05 ng/?l?50 ng/?l,whereas(R)-lavandulyl acetate synthetics was not attractive.3 Primary field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of these bioactive compounds in Thrips palmi. The results showed that(R)-lavandulyl acetate and neryl(S)-2-methylbutanoate both have significantly repell to Thrips palmi. In the aggregation pheromones of Frankliniella intonsa,(R)-lavandulys acetate may play a part in repelling other different genus thrips.4.GC-MS analysis of odors collected from males of F.intonsa showed that the ratio of neryl(S)-2-methylbutanoate to(R)-lavandulyl acetate was 1.64:1.Three ratios(3:1,2:1 and 1:1)were selected for field trials, which the 2:1 blend of neryl(S)-2-methylbutanoate and(R)-lavandulys acetat decreased trap catches significantly. The trap catches, compared with those in the control field, were decreased by 77.1%,72.0%and 80.5%,respectively.The results indicate that aggregation pheromones may be beneficial to enhance its capacity of interspecific competition.Flower thrips release aggregation pheromone, one can draw flower thrips female and male adults gathered, mating in the gathering place, the other side can inhibit other types of thrips away from the gathering. The male-produced aggregation pheromone in Frankliniella intonsa attracts females and males,on the other hand is to keep other thrips away from these aggregation sites.
