The biosafety assessment is an important issue for transgenic rice before it can be commercialized. In this study, the resistance of a transgenic rice "Ganlv 1" with cry1Ab/Ac on target pests Chilo suppressalis and Cnaphalocrocis medialis was evaluated under both laboratory and field conditions. The resistance of "Ganlv 1" to non-target pest brown planthopper(BPH)was studied by SSST(Standard Seedbox Screening Technique). The impacts of "Ganlv1" on feeding and oviposition behavior of BPH was measured by feeding and oviposition selectivity experiment. The effects of "Ganlv 1" on development(nymph duration and adult weight)and reproduction(number of offspring)of BPH were evaluated by using "Ganlv1" continuous feeding BPH five generations. The impact of"Ganlv 1" on arthropod community, guild dominance and communities dissimilarity were also evaluated under field conditions. The results showed that the mortality of BT rice against Chilo suppressalis larvae was more than 98%and significantly higher compared with the control rice. The occurrence and damage of Chilo suppressalis and Cnaphalocrocis medialis in BT rice plots were lower than the control rice plots. Both "Ganlv 1" and non-transgenic rice showed moderately resistance(MR)to BPH at seedling stage. There were no significant differences between"Ganlv 1" and the control on feeding selectivity, oviposition preference of BPH.No significant differences of nymph duration, adult weight and number of offspring of 2nd and 5th generation were found between the "Ganlv 1" and the control rice, except that the 3rd instar age of 2nd generation fed on "Ganlv 1" was shorter than that on the control rice.Compared with the control rice plots, there were no significant differences in community indices such as species richness, dominance index,Shannon-Wiener diversity index and evenness index in BT rice plots. Moreover, there were no significant differences in the five guilds dominance in the BT rice plots and the control rice plots. From this study,it can be conculuded that transgenic Bt rice "Ganlv 1" had high resistance to its target pests Chilo suppressalis and Cnaphalocrocis medialis.it can definitely control the damage of its target pests."Ganlv 1" did not significant affect the seedling resistance, feeding and oviposition behavior, and development of BPH compared with the control rice.It was apparent that the transgenic Bt rice "Ganlv 1"had no significant adverse impact on the arthropod community structure and guild dominance under the field conditions.
