In order to screen out the germplasm of epimedium which is suitable for artificial cultivation in Hunan area,and provide a theoretical reference for the high yield and high quality breeding of Herba Epimedii and artificial cultivation and standardization of Herba Epimedii in Hunan Province,we carried out a series of experiment.In this study,five broadleaf cultivars of Epimedium brevicornum in different regions of Hunan Province were used as experimental materials.The same soil matrix and cultivation conditions were used to compare the seed length,seed width and length/width of different epimedium germplasm,as well as the morphological characters of plant height,stem diameter,leaf length,leaf width and leaf area.The comparation relationship of photosynthetic characteristics such as net photosynthetic rate and transpiration rate and its relationship of geographical and climatic factors of origin were made.The following main findings were obtained:There were some differences in seed morphology between seed length,seed width and length/width ratio of different germplasm of Epimedium.However,the difference of seed length,seed width and length/width of different germplasm of Epimedium did not reach the significant level.The geographical and climatic factors of different germplasm origin of Epimedium such as altitude,annual rainfall,frost-free period and July average temperature have a significant effect on the seed traits like seed length,seed width and length/width ratio.There were significant differences among the three morphological characters of the plant height,stem diameter and leaf width of the different germplasm of Epimedium brevicornum,among which the differences of stem and leaf average width were significant.And the morphological characters of the different germplasm of Epimedium were different due to the combination of genetic and environmental factors.Therefore,plant morphological traits such as plant height,stem diameter and leaf width could be used as references for selection of breeding of Epimedium.The diurnal variation of photosynthetic rate and its response to light,carbon dioxide and water use capacity of different germplasms of Epimedium brevicornum were studied.Sangzhi and Yizhang in five species of Herba Epimedii have the strongest photosynthetic ability,high light energy utilization efficiency,high CO2 utilization rate,high transpiration rate,strong water cycle ability,and can use less water efficiently for higher efficiency Photosynthesis,which are more suitable for growing in arid soil environment.Because of the above,Sangzhi provenance and Yizhang provenance and other two epimedium germplasm is suitable for Hunan area to promote the cultivation of epimedium good germplasm resources.The results showed that the net photosynthetic rate of Epimedium brevophyllum was closely related to the climatic and environmental factors such as Ci,VpdL,Ca and RH,among which the net photosynthetic rate were negatively significantly correlated with Ci and VpdL,and had the positive correlation with Ca and RH.Because of the low light compensation point and the high light saturation point,Arrows Epimedium plant has strong resistance to shade,considering the negative herbaceous species.So arrows Epimedium is very suitable for planting under the forest used as ground cover plants.In addition,the plantation of Epimedium brevicornum has a high CO2 compensation point and CO2saturation point,indicating that the utilization of low concentration of CO2 in the arrows Epimedium is weak.
