In this study,three kinds of low-cost,eco-friendly,and abundant plant fiber wastes(waste cotton,wheat straw,and coir dust)were used instead of peat to explore their feasibility as a sand-based root zone modified substance.The test turf was planted with the Kentucky bluegrass(Poa Pratensis L.)sod,and the root zone was mixed with sand and various added materials according to a certain mass ratio.A total of 5 treatments:99%sand+1%peat(CK),98%sand+2%peat(Ti),99%sand+1%waste cotton(T2),99%sand+1%wheat straw(T3)and 99%sand+1%coir dust(T4),Then the effects of different treatments on the physical properties of the root zone,the quality of the turf,the quality of the turf and the soil properties of the turf were studied.The main findings are as follows:(1)The saturated hydraulic conductivity,bulk density,water holding capacity,total porosity,capillary porosity and aeration porosity of the T2,T3 and T4 treated root zone materials are in accordance with USGA recommendations.It is shown that these three kinds of root zone substrate are suitable as the root zone construction materials for the sports turf.(2)The turf appearance quality of each treatment is:CK>T1>T4>T3>T2,and the scores are all above 6.7.It is indicated that the addition of these three plant fiber wastes in the root zones are suitable for turfgrass growth,and the addition of coir dust was better for turfgrass growth.(3)The rebound performance,surface hardness,sliding friction performance and rotational traction performance of each treated turf are in line with the sports field turf quality evaluation standard.(4)The T2 treatment showed the highest soil compaction and shear strength in each measurement.The soil compaction was significantly higher than CK treatment in 2 measurements(P<0.05),while the soil shear strength was always Significantly higher than CK treatment(P<0.05).This shows that the addition of waste cotton in the sand-based root zone can achieve a good reinforcement effect.In summary,waste cotton,wheat straw and coir dust,which are three kinds of plant fiber wastes,can replace peat as a modified substance for sand-based root zone.Adding coir dust is more conducive to turfgrass growth,and adding waste cotton can play a good reinforcement effect.
