The cultivated land area of barren soil in yellow river alluvial region in Jiangsu Province is about 800,000 hectares. It is an important grain production area in the province, and also a major concentrated distribution area of low and medium yield fieldsThe soil is characterized by thin sand, compaction, leakage of water and fertilizer,as well as low levels of soil organic matter, imbalances of macro-and micro nutrients. In order to pursue yield and short-term economic benefits, local farmers usually apply chemical fertilizers during the planting process, and rarely apply organic fertilizer, which causes soil compaction, soil structure degradation of the plow layer, and soil nutrient disorders. From a long-term perspective, although compound fertilizers can solve the nutrient requirements of crops in a short period of time, the impact on farmland soil quality is also difficult to reverse.Organic fertilizer is a natural fertilizer that contains a large amount of organic matter and a variety of mineral nutrients. It has a wide range of sources,is easy to produce, has a slow and lasting fertilizer effect,is beneficial to fertility, improves soil, and provides crop quality. It is an important fertilizer source for agricultural production. It plays an important role in improving soil fertility, increasing crop yield and improving qualityThis study is aimed at obstructing factors such as low soil fertility and weak biological function in the alluvial area, based on chemical fertilizer treatment as control(CF),comparing different organic fertilizers[(common commercial organic fertilizers(NCF),bio-organic fertilizers(BOF)]and their different application rates(0,2250,4500,6750 kg/hm2)on nutrient and biological characteristics of barren soil in yellow river alluvial region of Binhai County,Jiangsu Province. The results showed that the application of organic fertilizer increased soil organic matter content, and nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium nutrient content, reduced soil pH,and improved Physical and chemical properties of soil;the application of organic fertilizer also increased alkaline phosphatase activity, soil microbial activity and diversity index, and improved soil biological functions. As the amount of organic fertilizer increased from 2250 kg/hm2 to 6750 kg/hm2,the effect of organic fertilizer application on soil nutrient content and biological function improvement became more and more obvious. The corn yield also increased by 0.75%to 25.8%compared with the control(CF).Among them, the application of 6750kg/hm2 ordinary organic fertilizer had the best effect in increasing yield.Under the same dosage, the effect of NOF treatment on soil physical and chemical properties and nutrients was better than that of BOF treatment, but the improvement of BOF on biological properties was higher than that of NOF treatment. The soil fertility indexes and crop yields of organic fertilizer improved in a short time, especially in the treatment of 6750 kg/hm2.Due to the complex environments of the field,it is not possible to accurately measure and analyze its biological characteristics. Therefore, the pot experiments were performed at the same time as field tests to supplement the test data. The results showed that the application of two organic fertilizers produced the similar effects on soil nutrients under the same application level in a growing season.Compared to the control(CF),the soil available nutrients at the seedling stage significantly improved for both NOF and BOF treatments, and positively correlated with the amounts of fertilizer applied in a certain range. No significant difference was found in soil enzyme activities during harvest stage, but the enzyme activities in bio-organic fertilizer(BOF)and common organic fertilizer(NOF)treatments still showed an increasing tendency compared with the control(CF).Urease activities were positively correlated with the contents of alkaline nitrogen, available potassium and organic matter;while positively correlated with total nitrogen content, although not significant. The Alkaline phosphatase activities were significantly correlated with the contents of available phosphorus and potassium. The application of organic fertilizer increased the abundance of microorganisms in the soil, but the bio-organic fertilizer was more effective. The amounts of bio-organic fertilizer applied at 2250 kg/hm2 and above could significantly change the soil microbial population structure, which similar to the amount of common organic fertilizer applied at 6750kg/hm2.Both bio-organic fertilizer and common organic fertilizer could promote the maize yield to a certain extent, but only BOF3 treatment showed a significant increase. It could be concluded that the application of organic fertilizer in the barren soil in yellow river alluvial area, especially the application of bio-organic fertilizer, could significantly improve soil nutrients, enhence soil enzyme activities and soil microbial richness, and ultimately achieve the purpose of increasing crop production.
