Fresh sweet corn has developed rapidly in recent years for its rich nutrition,unique flavor and significant economic benefits.National policies have been adjusted and optimized the structure of the planting industry,thus consumers are increasingly accepting and liking fresh sweet corn,as well as breeders have also increased their efforts to improve and innovate the value of sweet corn.Combining ability is the main indicator for evaluating the value of inbred lines and their utilization potential,thus it is the first issue to be considered for germplasm improvement and germplasm innovation.Combining force analysis of inbred line materials can both help breeders understand their genetic characteristics and improve breeding efficiency.In this study,we analyzed the combining ability of 10 sweet corn inbred lines cultivated by Chongqing Academy of Agricultural Science,deploying an incomplete two-row hybridization method,and taking 4 sweet corn inbred lines as female parents(P1: DH3534,H1019,WU353,H808),6 sweet corn inbred lines the male parents(P2: ET1003,T5728,BT708,BT723,BT731,T9623),and 24 hybrid combinations were assembled.These 24 combinations were applied to the field in a completely random block design with three repetitions.The experiment also investigated the cooking quality,reducing sugar content,water-soluble sugar content,skin residue rate,fresh ear yield per plant,plant height,ear height,ear length,bald tip length,number of rows of grains,number of rows of ears,100-grain weight,seeding rate and other 13 traits.Results of the above combining ability analysis,could be provided as the scientific basis for the utilization of these 10 inbred lines.The main results are as follows:1.Analysis of the GCA effect of 13 traits of 10 sweet corn inbred lines showed that the GCA effect values of different inbred lines with the same trait varied,some with positive effects while others were negative.In specific traits,some differences in GCA effect values between inbred lines were extremely significant,while some were not.The same inbred line exhibits different GCA effects on different traits.It has a positive effect on one trait and a negative effect on another trait.No inbred line exhibited an uniform positive or negative effect on the GCA effect of a trait.Among the 10 sweet corn inbred lines in this study,DH3534 showed a high positive effect on reducing sugar content,fresh ear yield per plant,ear length,number of rows,and seed yield.DH3534 performed positively in the improvement of the reduction of progeny,sugar content,fresh ear yield per plant,ear length,number of rows,and seed yield.H1019 showed a good positive effect on cooking quality,reducing sugar content,and water-soluble sugar content,while in a very low negative effect was emerged on the bald apex traits,indicating that H1019 has a great chance to improve the quality of the combination and bald tip length,,both DH3534 and H1019 have the high application value in breeding attribute to their outstanding characteristics.2.The results of heritability estimation showed that the narrow sense heritability of the reducing sugar content,percentage of dregs,number of rows of grains,ear length,ear height,plant height,seed yield,water-soluble sugar content,and cooking quality were higher,therefore,these traits should be selected in earlier generations,while traits such as yield of fresh ear per plant,bald tip length,number of ears per row,100-grain weight,etc.,should be selected in the later generation,especially the 100-grain weight,which is greatly affected by the environment and can improve the selection effect,is also necessary to be selected in the later generation..3.According to the 24 hybrid combinations in this study,the hybrid combinations with better yields per panicle and other special traits were DH3534 × T5728 and DH3534 × ET1003,and H1019 × T5728 and H1019 × T9623 came to be the better ones when the cooking quality was considered.
