This study seeks to investigate the cultivation feasibility of the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris in membrane treated industrial MTDW from SDIC Guangdong Bio-Energy Company Limited Guangdong,Zhanjiang-China.And the possible effects of the harvested biomass on the growth of pearl oyster?Pinctada fucata martensii?.The entire study was carried out on the laboratory scale.Taken the main objective into account, the study was broken down to a series of experiments, and below are the summaries of the main findings:1.Effects of light intensity on Chlorella vulgaris growth and biomass production in MTDW In this study,C.vulgaris was cultivated in MTDW under 1000,2000,3000,4000 and 5000lx to ascertain the best light intensity for cultivation, biomass production, and nutrient removal. The results showed significant nutrient removal and biomass production under treatment 4000lx.Removal 50.10%of TN,76.92%of TP and 54.30%of COD.The 4000 lx shows the highest Chl-a and Car contents of 3.13±0.17 and 0.93±0.25 mg/L respectively.2.Effects of temperature on C.vulgaris growth and biomass production in MTDWThe purpose of this study was to measure biomass production,Chl-a content, nutrient and COD removal efficiency under 15,20,25,30 and 35?.At the end of the study, the maximum biomass concentration of 481200±10286.56 cell/m L,and 4.67±0.56 mg/L of Chl-a were observed under30?.Treatment 30?observed the highest TN and TP removal efficiency of 59.12 and 67.46%respectively.However,25?the highest COD removal efficiency of 53.26%.3.Effects of Inoculum Volume on C.vulgaris Growth and Biomass Production in MTDW This study was carried out to assess the best algal inoculum volume under which maximum biomass,Chl-a content and nutrients and COD removal can be achieved.C.vulgaris was cultivated in MTDW under 10,20,30,40 and 50%algal inoculum volume concentration.Ant the end of the experiment,40%showed the highest biomass productivity of 253777.77±1368.69 cell/m L/day,76.24%TN,and 82.27%TP removal efficiency. However 30%and 50%achieved the highest Chl-a,and COD removal efficiency with 5.3737 mg/L and 58.98%respectively.4.Orthogonal experimentsThe purpose of this chapter was to determine the optimal growth factor combination for the cultivation of C.vulgaris in MTDW for maximum growth and biomass productions.Temperature and light intensity showed maximum impact on C.vulgaris growth that is biomass concentration?DW?and Chl-a content than algal inoculum volume concentration. The 30?,4000 lx,40%Vinoculation/Vmedia had however demonstrated to be the best optimal growth conditions of cultivating C.vulgaris in MTDW for maximum growth and biomass production.5.C.vulgaris Growth Comparison between MTDW and BG11 MediaThis study tested the growth and effects of Chlorella vulgaris biomass cultivated in MTDW and BG11?control?.Nutrient?total nitrogen and total phosphorus?,COD,TOC,and macro/micronutrient removal efficiency,as well as biochemical compositions, were assessed. The results showed 94%and 80%,and 72.24%and 72.50%removal efficiency within three days for TP and TN,and COD and TOC respectively. In addition,100%,and 85.37,and 100%and 42.86removal efficiency for Ca2+and Mg+2,and Pb2+and Mo2-respectively.The study also attained biomass productivities of 0.04 g/L/d?MTDW?and 0.02 g/L/d?control?,49.6±1.4%?protein?26.1±0.6%?carbohydrate?and 10.4±1.8%?lipid?for MTDW and 22.4±2.3%?protein?29.9±1.1%?carbohydrate?and?16.2±0.4%?for control respectively.6.Effects of C.vulgaris?MTDW?biomass on growth performance for juvenile pearl oyster?Pinctada fucata martensii? The chapter compared the effect of C.vulgaris?MTDW?,Oocystis borgei,Thalassiosira weissflogii,C.vulgaris?BG11?,Spirulina plentis,Haematococcus pluvialis and Dunaliella salina diet on growth performance and survival rate of Pinctada fucata martensii. The survival rate increased by 77.33,75.67,72.00,70.67,57.70,56,33 and 27.66%for MTDW,O.borgei,T.weissflogii,BG11,S.plentis,H.pluvialis and D.salina respectively.MTDW diet significantly influenced the growth of Pinctada fucata martensii by 0.99±0.12%?SGR?and 77.3%?SR?compared to other diets including the control. In conclusion, the biomass of C.vulgaris cultivated in MTDW was significantly effective on juvenile Pinctada fucata martensii in terms of growth performance and survival rate. Therefore MTDW could serve as a medium for cultivation C.vulgaris for as a potential source of protein in aquaculture.
