Objective: To investigate the incidence and risk factors of deep venous thrombosis(DVT)using intermittent pneumatic compression devices after lumbar spine surgery. Methods: A total of 507 lumbar surgery patients in our hospital from January 2016 to February 2018 were reviewed and classified according to operation type. All patients used intermittent pneumatic compression devices to prevent DVT after surgery.Gender, age, body mass index(BMI),tumor,DVT history, hypertension, diabetes and the history of heart disease, paraplegia, operation time, incision length, type of lumbar surgery, and distribution of thrombus of all the patients were recorded. Both univariate analysis and binary logistic regression analysis were used to analyse risk factors for DVT.Results: Twelve(2.37%)of 507 patients were diagnosed with DVT by ultrasonography and confirmed by venography.Among the 12 detected cases of DVT,only 3(0.59%)patients presented clinical smptoms of DVT,while the other 9(1.78%)cases were asymptomatic. No patient presenting clinically suspected pulmonary embolism(PE)was observed. The results of univariate analysis showed that gender,BMI,operation time, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease were not the risk factors of DVT(p>0.05).On the other hand, age, tumor,DVT history, incision length, paraplegia, and three or more levels posterior lumbar interbody fusion(PLIF)procedures showed significant difference between DVT and non-DVT group(p<0.05).Further multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that only advanced age and paraplegia were high risk factors of DVT(p<0.05).Conclusion: In this study, patients underwent lumbar spine surgery showed a low incidence of DVT after intervention with intermittent pneumatic device, which was consistent with previous reports.Advanced age and paraplegia are independent risk factors for DVT.Clinically,we should attach great importance to these kinds of patients to avoid the occurrence of fatal PE.
