A Structural Equation Model Among Body Fat Rate,Body Image And Sports Participation In College Students

Objective: Based on the Two-Compartment model and Social-Ecological model,the study aims to construct a Structural Equation Model of body fat rate,body image,and sports participation among university students to provide quantitative parameters for improving the college students' health and preventing obesity.Method: The Literature research method,questionnaire survey method,and biological measurement method were used in this research.The recipient of the study was 539 students from an higher education zone in Hangzhou.A convenient sampling method was used.Research tools include the Inbody 720 Body Composition Analyzer and a self-designed general data questionnaire,the multidimensional Body-self Relations Questionnaire(MBSRQ),Sex-adapted Silhouettes and Physical Activity Rating scale-3.In this study,503 valid questionnaires were collected and the return rate of questionnaires was 93.32%.Data was inputted into an Excel document then double checked with another researcher.SPSS20.0 software was used for statistical analysis and processing,and the Amos20.0 software was employed to test the structural equation model.Results:(1)According to the body fat rate,the obesity rate of male students was 20%,and the obesity rate of girls reached 27.54%.(2)Through the multi-dimensional body image questionnaire and Sexadapted silhouettes,it can be seen that college students' appearance evaluation score was 3.09 ± 0.50,appearance orientation score was 3.49 ± 0.47,the body areas satisfaction score was 2.95 ± 0.53,overweight preoccupation score was 2.62 ± 0.87,Self-Classified Weight score was 3.08 ± 0.79.Sex-adapted silhouettes measured the university student's current Silhouettes score was-0.7 ± 2.61,the ideal Silhouettes score was 1.59 ± 2.06,the physical dissatisfaction degree score was 2.28 ± 2.49.(3)In this study,the physical activity rating scale was used to measure the participation of exercise in college students.The participation of college students accounted for 34.19% for slight movement,the majority of the exercise time was 11-20 minutes and the frequency of exercise was 1-2 times/week.(4)The results show that gender,self-classified weight,exercise intensity,appearance evaluation and exercise frequency can explain the variation of body fat rate of college students by 63.8%.Non-normalized regression equation was:BF% = 0.181 + 8.786 × X1 + 4.345 × SCW-0.634 × EI-1.116 × AE-0.592 × EF.(5)The structural equation model shows that body image and exercise participation have a direct effect on the body fat rate of college students,and the normalized values are-0.55 and-0.48 respectively.There is no statistically significant correlation between body image and sports participation.Conclusion: It is impossible to find those college students who have recessive obesity(high BF% and low BMI)through the BMI standard.The influences factors of the College students' body fat rate included: sex,age,family composition,the grade,professional,family average income and their parents' overweight situation.These seven factors are statistical significance(p<0.05)with the college student's body fat rate.We need to pay more attention to these factors and to explore the specific interventions.The participants in this body image survey were in a moderate state of satisfaction with their adipose tissue.The multi-dimensional body image survey showed respondents were less satisfied with the dimensions of the body areas satisfaction and overweight preoccupation.Intervention measures should be considered to improve the overall image of college students from the perspective of internal and external.Among the five dimensions of college students' body image,except for the appearance concern dimension,the other four dimensions were significantly correlated with the body fat rate of college students(p<0.01).In addition,college students' physical dissatisfaction and their body fat content were also correlated and statistically significant(p<0.01).The results showed that the body fat rate of college students was significantly negatively correlated with their exercise involvement(p<0.01).The results showed that sex,self-classified weight,exercise intensity,appearance evaluation and exercise frequency could explain 63.8% of the variation of body fat rate in college students.Structural equation model shows that body image and exercise participation have a direct effect on college students ' body fat rate.
