Rectal cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors of digestive tract,as People's way of life, living environment and dietary structure changes, the incidence of rectal cancer gradually increases in recent years, and it becomes a serious threat to human health and quality of life. The tumor itself and its complications have a serious impact on the quality of life, and even life-threatening.So after diagnosis, the tumor must be treated in a timely and effective manner.Pre-treatment and pre-operative evaluation of the condition is critical.Precise preoperative staging of the tumor can determine the treatment options, such as surgery or neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. In addition, more and more preoperative imaging, such as magnetic resonance Imaging(MRI),computer tomography(CT),endorectal ultrasound(ERUS)and positron emission tomography imaging X-ray tomography / computed(PET/CT)in the assessment of preoperative surgical planning and selection with neoadjuvant therapy plays an important role.Among all these,Magnetic Resonance Imaging has been used more and more frequently in the preoperative staging of rectal cancer and the evaluation of neoadjuvant therapy for rectal cancer. It have a guiding significance in the visualization of layers of intestinal wall and better identification of the structure around the rectum, advantage of screening for suspected lymph nodes. This paper mainly describes the necessity, the operational principle in preoperative staging of rectal cancer, and its advantages and limitations compared with other imaging examinations.
