ObjectiveTo observe the influence of needling the He-Mu-point combination on the symptoms, quality of life(QoL),Somatostatin(SS)levels in plasma of Functional Dyspepsia(FD)patients by comparing with needling at Lower-He-point alone,so as to partly explore the mechanism of acupuncture at He-Mu-point combination regulating the gastrointestinal function.MethodsThis study included 70 patients, which were randomly divided into two groups: single Lower-He-point group(needling at ST36 alone)and He-Mu-point combination group(needling at single ST 36 and CV 12).Manual acupuncture treatment was performed at these points respectively once daily, five times for a procedure, and totally for 4 procedures and 20 days. The Nepean Dyspepsia Index(NDSI)and the Nepean dyspepsia life quality index(NDLQI)were used to evaluate the clinical efficacy before and after acupuncture treatment in two groups.Ensyme-linked ImmunoSorbent Assay(ELISA)technique was used to detect the concentration of SS in the plasma of FD patients before and after acupuncture in each group.Results1.60 patients had finished this trail.Thirty patients were at the single Lower-He point group and Thirty patients were at the He-Mu-point combination group.2.There were no statistical differences in baseline data of the two groups(P>0.05).3.Clinical evaluation(1)The within group analysis: The NDSI total score of the both two groups after acupuncture treatment decreased significantly compared to the baseline(P<0.01),The NDLQI scores, the four main symptoms score of the both two groups after acupuncture treatment were increased significantly compared to the baseline(P<0.01).(2)The between group analysis: No statistical differences in the NDSI scores,NDLQI scores, food and drink field score, sleep field score were found between the two groups(P>0.05),while acupuncture at Lower-He point alone could had no clinical significance of “sleep field”.(MCID<10).Acupuncture at He-Mu-point combination could significantly improved the interference field, cognitive control field compared to the Lower-He point(P<0.05).4.The influence of acupuncture on SS in plasma level for FD patients in two groups.(1)The within group analysis: acupuncture at Lower-He-point alone significantly decrease the SS level in plasma(P<0.05),but had no obvious effect on SS levels in the group of He-Mu-point combination of FD patients(P>0.05).(2)The between-group analysis: there was no statistical changes of plasma level of SS between the two groups(P>0.05).The decreased SS level in plasma at Lower-He point were significantly correlated with the decrease of NDLQI score.(P<0.05)Conclusion1.Both acupuncture at He-Mu-point combination and at Lower-He-point alone can improve the symptoms and the quality of life of FD patients, but He-Mu-points combination acupuncture is better than single Lower-He-point at the quality of life of FD patients.2.Lower-He-point alone can improve the level of SS.The regulation of SS level might be probably one of the important mechanism of acupuncture at treating for the quality of life of FD patients.
