Objective:This article aims to retrospectively study the effect of bioactive glass in the operation of limb fractures to evaluate the effect of bioactive glass on fracture healing and its degradation and absorption in human body. Methods:A retrospective review of 328 patients with limb fractures treated at the Department of Trauma Orthopaedics,Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital from April 2013 to December 2016,using bioactive glass(NovaBone(?),U.S.Noble Biotech Co.,Ltd.)to fill the bone defect. The mean follow-up time was 31.4 months.X-rays were used to evaluate the absorption of the graft. Results:The overall healing rate of the fracture was 93.5%.At the end of 12 months after surgery,58.3%of the patients had completely absorbed bioactive glass. In the patients whose last follow-up time was more than 24 months,89.4%of the bioactive glass had been completely absorbed. Conclusion:The bioactive glass can be used as a filler material for the bone defect of the extremities and can achieve satisfactory clinical results.
