ObjectiveTo investigate the effectiveness of the medial sural neuro-fasciocutaneous flap for repairing tissue soft defects on ankle and foot.MetoldsBetween January 2014 and January 2017,22 patients with soft tissue defects of the ankle and foot were treated. There were patients of 17 males and 5 females with the average age of 42 years(mean,22-58 years). The disease causes included traffic accident injury in 12 cases, crush injury in 6 cases, and blunt trauma in 4 cases. The time from injury to admission was 1-48 hours(mean,7.5 hours). The wound area ranged from 4 cm x 4 cm to 24 cm x 10 cm;The flaps ranged from 5 cm×5 cm to 25cm×11 cm.ResultAll of the flaps survived well and wounds healed with stage I.The patients of all were followed up 5-36 months(mean,22 months). The appearance of the medial sural neuro-fasciocutaneous flap was satisfactory, with no or little overstaffed. There were no obvious dysfunctions and no effect on the function at the donor site. All the flaps had satisfactory clinical results.ConclusionThe medial sural neuro-fasciocutaneous flap has the merits of relatively constant vascular anatomy, stable blood supply, and a long vascular pedicle. It is an ideal operative method to repair tissue soft defects on ankle and foot.
