| ObjectivesThrough the research on the visceral syndrome differentiation of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)and the excavation about different English versions of related content,this paper discussed the features,principles and methods of the translation about the visceral syndrome differentiation of TCM,and came up with some techniques for the translation of relevant terms,so as to enrich the standardized study on translation of TCM terms and build a firm bridge for TCM to go abroad.MethodsAccording to the second edition Diagnostics of Traditional Chinese Medicine,edited by Zhu Wenfeng,and content about diagnostics from Outline of Medical Qualification Examination in 2013,this paper selected 65 terms about visceral syndrome differentiation of TCM and their translation as the research object,which ensured that the selected terms can meet the demand of both teaching and clinic.The content of visceral syndrome differentiation was divided into seven parts,including heart diseases,lung diseases,spleen diseases,gastrointestinal diseases,hepatobiliary diseases,kidney and bladder disease and combined visceral diseases.This study selected six TCM standards or teaching materials with great influence and high academic level as terms translation sources,contrastively analyzed features of 65 terms and explored the correct translation methods of terms about visceral syndrome differentiation.ResultsFirstly,different English versions of the selected 65 terms were compared in detail,and reference methods of translation about each terms were proposed.Secondly,the translation principles and methods of TCM terms about visceral syndrome differentiation were put forward.Translators should follow the principles of "accuracy","correspondence" and "conciseness",start from the meaning of terms and the relevant lexical structure,clarify the logical relationship precisely and thentranslate these terms according to their meaning.Thirdly,there are still great differences of translations about TCM terms in different English versions.This is mainly reflected in different translation methods of the same terms,the same translation of different terms,and the diversification of the lexical structure of the same or similar terms in English translation.ConclusionsFirstly,the terms of TCM,especially about visceral syndrome differentiation,are usually difficult to understand and their translation methods are flexible and varied.If translators are not familiar with the knowledge of TCM,it will be difficult for them to translate correctly.Therefore,translators should not only strengthen the study about TCM knowledge,but also improve their skills about language,so as to serve the career of TCM translation better.Secondly,TCM terms often involve Chinese traditional culture and the cultural environment of target language countries,which requires translators to possess a high level of cultural cultivation so that they can be more than equal to TCM translation.Thirdly,when translating TCM terms,translators should accurately grasp the similarities and differences between terms and their relevant synonyms,consider their meaning carefully to avoid confusion and ambiguity in the application. |
