Objective To retrospectively explore the clinical effects of callus distraction with finger external fixation in treatment of metacarpophalangeal bone defects after hand trauma. Methods From December 2015 to December 2018,the clinical data of 17 patients with 26 metacarpophalangeal bone defects treated by callus distraction with finger external fixation was collected. There were 12 men and 5 women, from 25 to 53 years of age(average 33.82 years).Callus distraction operations were performed 3months after hand trauma. The clinical effects and total activity of motion(TAM)of all hands were observed and evaluated by the Tentative Assessment Criteria for Upper Extremity Function by Hand Surgery Society. Results 17 patients were followed up successfully, the follow-up duration was 18.5 months(12-24months).26 metacarpal and phalangeal bone defects were reconstructed and the bony callus was completely calcified at the lengthened part. The mean lengthening was1.70±0.50 cm(from 1.2 to 2.5 cm);The total activity of motion(TAM)was excellent in12 cases, good in 3,and The total excellent and good rate was 88.24%.Conclusions Callus distraction with finger external fixation in metacarpophalangeal bone defects after hand trauma can provide good clinical function and satisfied appearance.
