Urtica fissa,a perennial herb widely distributed in China,is a traditional herbal medicine;Artemisia frigida,a perennial herb distributed in the arid regions of northern China,is a good fodder in livestock areas.Herein, the research progress on chemical constituents and biological activity of Urtica fissa and Artemisia frigida were reviewed. As part of our continuing efforts to search bioactive compounds derived from Urtica species and Artemisia species, the 95% aqueous ethanol extract of Urtica lobatifolia and Artemisia frigida was systematically investigated, including compounds isolation, structure identification and biological activity evaluation. In this study,38 compounds were obtained by column chromatography including silica gel column chromatography,Sephadex LH-20 gel column chromatography and semi-HPLC.The structures of 28 compounds were elucidated on the basis of pectroscopy methods including NMR,CD and MS data.Among them,17 compounds were isolated from Urtica fissa, including a compound with new skeleton, three new compounds, four new natural products;11 compounds were isolated from Artemisia frigida, inclouding three new compounds. The anti-tumor activies against HeLa,HT-29 and HepG2 cells of compound 2*,3*,4*,8*,9*,10*,11* were evaluated by MTT assay. The result showed that all the tested compounds exibitied certain degree of inhibitory activity toward all three cells and showed in a dose-dependent manner. In the present study, several compounds with novel structure or biological activity were obtained, which enriched the chemcial diversity of secondary metabolites of Urtica and Artemisia species.
