Objective: To study the application and mechanism of extracorporeal shock wave(ESW)in the treatment of knee stiffness in rats. Methods: 36 8-week-old SD rats were randomly divided into three groups: A,B and C,a-joint stiffness group;b-joint stiffness shock wave treatment group;c-normal control group,a,b-joint stiffness model operation,C-group did not do treatment. The model of knee stiffness was established and the suture was removed 4 weeks after operation. Before and after the removal of the suture, the degree of passive motion of the knee joint was measured under anesthesia. If the degree of passive motion of the knee joint was more than 30 ° than normal, the model was established successfully.A.In group B,4 weeks after the operation, the suture was removed to measure the knee joint mobility, and the rats meeting the standard were selected.Group B rats were treated with extracorporeal shock wave(standard probe, energy 1.2bar,pulse 1000 times, frequency 5Hz),twice a week, for 8 weeks. After 8 weeks of treatment, the changes of knee joint passive activity, general changes and histological changes were analyzed. Results: 4 weeks after the operation, the suture was removed, and the passive movement of the knee joint was limited significantly(P < 0.05).After 8 weeks of external shock wave treatment, compared with group C(normal control group),there were synovium hyperplasia and cartilage cracks around the knee joint in the stiff group, and Mankin score was significantly increased, while in the stiff group, the passive activity of the knee joint was improved,Mankin score was significantly reduced. Conclusion: extracorporeal shock wave can improve the adhesion of the knee joint in rats by improving the soft tissue around the knee joint,so as to improve the passive activity of the knee joint in rats.
