Objective:To study the bone augmentation effect of onlay bone grafting and maxillary sinus lifting in the patients with alveolar bone deficiency who require dental implants, and to compare the changes of the available alveolar bone volume before and after the operation, and further to explore the clinical application of these techniques. Methods:Five patients with dentition defects were collected from August,2018 to September,2019 in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University.Through the preoperative evaluation of dental specialty and imaging examination, the bone augmentation operation plan and the follow-up implant options were made, and CBCT was reexamined to compare the effect of bone augmentation operation. Results:The changes of alveolar bone mass at corresponding sites were measured of the five patients in a 3-6 month follow-up after receiving bone augmentation surgery. The average horizontal bone mass of alveolar ridge in the edentulous area of patients after Onlay bone grafting increased by 4.4mm,5.5mm,6.3mm,4.9mm and 4.5mm respectively;the vertical bone mass of sinus floor in patients with internal maxillary sinus elevation increased by 4.3mm and 5.8mm separately;the vertical bone volume of sinus floor in patients with external maxillary sinus elevation increased by 8.4mm.All patients had no postoperative complications such as rejection of graft materials, wound dehiscence, infection and sensory abnormality with a good healing of soft tissue in operation area. Conclusions:Onlay bone grafting and maxillary sinus lifting can effectively increase the horizontal or vertical alveolar bone volume in the operation area, and improve the alveolar bone mass deficiency in patients with dentition defects.
