| OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of probiotics on children with Constipation-predominant Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS-C)and Functional constipation(FC)by comparing their clinical symptoms and intestinal microorganism changes after Bifidobacterium treatment.METHODS: IBS-C and FC children aged from four to eighteen were recruited in current study.All the patients were given Bifidobacteria treatment for 4 weeks.They were followed up at 0,4 and 8 weeks.Their symptom scales and stool samples were collected at each time point.Ten healthy children with the same age group were also incurred as controls.Fecal samples of the healthy controls were collected.16 S rRNA Qualcomm Sequencing were applied to detect stool microotganism.RESULTS : The severity and frequency of abdominal pain,the frequency of defecation,the excrement character,as well as the satisfaction scores of defecation were improved significantly in all the 29 patients at the end of 4-weeks treatment(P<0.01).The score of life satisfaction was higher at 4 weeks after withdraw of Bifidobacterium than the end of treatment in 18 patients who had completed three follow-up visits(P<0.05).However,there was no significant difference for other symptoms between the two groups.Children with FC and IBS-C had higher bacterial abundance,fewer Veilleella,Sutterella,Actinobacteria and Fusobacterium,but richer Prevotella than healthy controls.After the treatment of Bifidobacterium tripletand,Bifidobacterium and Sutterella were increased,while Prevotella and Megamonas were decreased in the patients' feces.CONCLUSION: Probiotics can alleviate the clinical symptoms of FC and IBS-C in children and the treatment effects maintains at least four weeks after withdraw the medicine.Children with FC and IBS-C have different intestinal flora and higher bacterial abundance than healthy controls.Bifidobacteria triple bacteria treatment changes the distribution of fecal flora,which is worthy for further study. |
