This study focuses on the synchronic phonological research on Chosan Dialect. As the Korea peninsular remains divided,it is not available for researchers to carry out a field survey in North Korea. Therefore,a systematic study on Pyongan Dialect has not been realized yet.The data adopted in this paper were collected from the field survey by Chosan immigrants born in North Korea but now live in China.Based on the morphological analysis of the statistics, the phonological system has been identified and the phonological processes occurred between the underlying form have been figured out. There are five chapters in this thesis. In the Chapter one,the objectives, objects, methods and history of the study will be introduced. In chapter two, this thesis mainly discussed the phonological system of Chosan ialect. There are 20 consonants(p,ph,p',t,th,t',k,kh,k',s,s',t(?),t(?)h,t(?)',n,m,?,h,?,1),8 vowels(i,e,?,?,(?)a,o,u),2 glides(j,w)and 10 dipththongs(ja,j?,jo,ju,je,wi,we,w?,w?,wa). Each vowel has pairs of long and short vowel. The long vowels are only valid in the word-initial position. As the phonological processes usually occur when the nominals combine with the particles,or the verbal stems combine with the endings, the underlying forms of the nominals and verbal stems should be confirmed first before describing the phonological process. In chapter three, the underlying form has been confirmed and discussed in two types, which are nominals and verbal stems.10 kinds of consonant-final types(/p,ph,a,s,t(?)h,n,k,?,1,ps/),8 kinds of vowel-final types(/i,e,?,?,(?),a,o,u/)of the unique underlying forms and one multi-underlying form/Xn {a-?}/have been identified in the nominals of Chosan dialect. As for the verbal stems,23 unique underlying forms(22 unique consonant-final types:/X{p,ph,m,t,th,s,n,l,t(?),t(?)h,k,k',h,?,ps,ntc,lth,lp,lm,lk,nh,lh,1?}-/,8 unique vowel-final types:/X{i,e,?,?,(?),a,o,u}-/)and 7 multi-underlying forms(/X{p-u}-,X{ph,p'}{u-u(?)}-,X{(?)-l}(?)-,X{u-l(?)}-,X{t-l?}-,kath{(?)-?}-,Xh{a-?}-/)have be Based on the underlying forms confirmed in the above chapters,in chapter four, the phonological processes of Chosan Dialect have been discussed in 4 groups:alternation, deletion, addition, and contraction.Alternation includes consonant alternation and vowel alternation.Deletion includes consonant deletions, liquid deletion, glide deletion and vowel deletion.Contraction includes consonant contraction and vowel contraction. In the last chapter,a conclusion will be presented and future expectations on Chosan Dialect study have been elaborated.
