The Effects Of Parents Concept On College Students' Self-construal

Confucian culture divides ethic relation by “benevolence(i.e.close or distant relationship)”and “righteousness(i.e.consciousness of superiority and inferiority)”into Five Cardinal Relations to qualify the Chinese self-construal.This Chinese traditional disorder pattern weakens the Chinese self-independence,accordingly,when Chinese defining themselves,they always put themselves in a certain social relationship.Subtly,Chinese have internalized relational-self as the selfconcept.This study first reviewed previous researches about” self”,introduced the present researches on the research paradigm and theoretical basis of "self",and then illustrated that Chinese self-construal is under the influence of the Confucian culture.On this basis,three series of experiment were carried on to investigate whether the Chinese self-construal includes others,especially some other people with intimate long-term relationships(such as mother and father).Study1 using R\K judgment paradigm,from memory bias perspective,investigated that does Chinese self-construal includes the concept of father.The result shows that father notion is close to Chinese self-concept,but mother notion is closer to the core self.Study2 utilizing a computerized false-belief task,from the perspective of theoryof-mind,investigated that if Chinese self-construal includes the concept of mother.The result shows that,The reasoning of the self and perspective-taking of others seem similar to the western research results,i.e.,the” Self” perspective is always processed,but participants were more sensitive to the “mother” perspective and then attracted more cognitive resources.So when the “mother” perspective were taken,participants could process rapidly,and were easy to disturb by the “other” perspective.Study3 utilizing spatial metaphor and priming paradigm,investigated the intuitive relationship between self,mother,father and others.The result shows that Under the parents priming condition,participants reacted faster,even faster then self priming condition.The boundaries between self and their parents are not so clear.In conclusion,confucius ethics affect the Chinese self-construal and weaken the Chinese independent self,so that the concept of some other people with intimate longterm relationships(such as mother and father)are more similar to core self.Different from the former study,this paper found the Chinese self-construal not includes intimate others,the high sensitivity of processing of the concept of parents will attract more cognitive resources,and produce the phenomenon of processing advantages.The results of the study has certain significance to further explore the Chinese self-construal.
