The Chinese Repository was founded by missionaries who came to China in 1832 and issued a stop in 1851,which was an English newspaper aimed at introducing China to the westerners, and its editors and main contributors for example Robert Morrison,Elijah Coleman Bridgman and Samuel Wells Williams were both outstanding Chinese learners and Sinologist.Because of the influence of those editors and contributors,it took a very short time for the Chinese Repository to become into a base for westerners to learn Chinese. From 1832 to 1851,articles on Chinese learning published on the Chinese Repository totaled a large quantity, and most of them shared a high quality. These articles covered almost every aspects of the Chinese language, not only pronunciations, characters and grammars, but also learning strategies and experiences.Among all the strategies, the idea gained most recommendation, and the second widely recognized idea is attaching great importance to radicals(or components)and using them as the key to master Chinese characters, both of the two ideas proved to be quite effective. As a non-alphabetic writing, the Chinese language has its own characteristics, which are so different from alphabetic writing that makes it difficult to learn for westerners.Advantages of these two ideas are that they have a good conformation with the characteristics of Chinese language and successfully reduced the difficulty of the learning task,so we could hold an expectation that they will benefit the career of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages in the future.
