A Study On The Naming Of Qin Long Dishes In Light Of Idealized Cognitive Model

There are eight major styles of cooking in china,each having a wide variety of dishes and unique flavor.Nowadays,the study about Chinese dishes is abundant,ranging from translation,culture,language to many other aspects.However,beside eight major styles,there is another style that is not fully recognized in research: the Qin Long style.It is popular in Shanxi,Gansu,Ningxia,Qinghai,Xinjiang and beyond.It is often referred to as the northwest style of cooking,represented by Shanxi and Gansu dishes.As part of the northwest culture along “The belt and Road”,Qin Long dishes are worth studies.Dish names,as an important part of language and culture,have already aroused interest of economists and linguists.More and more attention is paid to them.Much research goes to dish names,including data-and theory-driven studies.However,most research is focused on depicting linguistic phenomenon and little focus is laid on the cognitive situation behind dish naming.Therefore,the depth and breadth of the dish names study is far from adequate.In view of this,the present study attempts to find out dish naming in light of ICM.Cognitive linguistics holds that dish names are a cognitive product.Like a mirror,such naming reflects the human language and cognition,based on the research at home and abroad.This thesis studies the dish naming of Qin Long style in light of Idealized Cognitive Model proposed by Lakoff in Cognitive Linguistics.There are four basic idealized cognitive models: propositional model,image-schema model,metaphor model and metonymy model.Through analysis,this study finds that there are four major cognitive models in the Qin Long dish naming and the models are related in certain ways.This thesis falls into six chapters.The first chapter is about the research background,purpose and significance of this study.The second chapter offers a review of the study about Chinese dishes conducted by previous scholars and makes a general description about researches both at home and abroad.The third chapter respectively introduces the four models of Idealized cognitive models and analyzes the relationship between them.The fourth chapter introduces the subjects,research methodology and research instruments of this study.The fifth chapter is analysis and discussion.Firstly,it classifies the data of Qin long dish names according to naming motivation,according to their specific naming method.Then they are analyzed within the framework of Idealized cognitive models.Finally,the thesis presents some findings from the analysis and summarizes the cognitive ways,cognitive paths and naming methods of Qin Long dishes.The last chapter is conclusion,where some findings are iterated for references,additional to some limitations of this study and suggestions for future studies.
