The studies on reading always focused on how to improve reading strategies and reading skills.By choosing the reading materials which the students wanted to read,the Sustained Silent Reading could not only help students improve reading attitude,but also improve students' reading strategies and reading skills,including reading comprehension and language knowledge use.So the research talked about three questions:(1)What effect does Sustained Silent Reading have on the senior high school students' reading attitude?(2)What effect does Sustained Silent Reading have on the senior high school students' reading comprehension?(3)What effect does Sustained Silent Reading have on the senior high school students' language knowledge use?The research chose the subjects in senior one from the Second Senior High School of Qinan County.Class five-the experimental class(EG)and class six-the control class(CG)both had 40 students.Before and after the students use the Sustained Silent Reading program,the teacher would use Estes Reading Attitude Scale to examine the changes of students' reading attitude and use the pretest and post-test to examine the changes of students' reading comprehension and language knowledge use.Before the experiment,the students in the two classes have the same English level.The experimental class used the Sustained Silent Reading program,while the control class used the recent common reading method,namely,they did reading exercises after school,including reading comprehension exercises and grammar exercises.The two classes had the same reading time.At last,the thesis used the SPSS 17.0 to analyze the data.By analyzing the data,the thesis got the following conclusions:(1)SSR could improve students' reading attitude.The students in the experimental class got a higher score in the Sustained Silent Reading,their reading attitude would get a higher score in the post-test of the Estes Reading Attitude Scale.Especially the item which was “There are many books which I hope to read”in the pretest and post-test improved the most greatly.The item which was “Watching TV is better than reading” had no improvement.The item which was “Books aren't usually good enough to finish”decreased.(2)SSR could improve students' reading comprehension.The students in the experimental class got a higher score in the Sustained Silent Reading,they would get a higher score in reading comprehension part of the post-test.The mean of the main idea questions,detailed information questions and vocabulary questions in the experimental class was higher than the control class.The mean of the detailed informationquestion had the biggest gap between the two classes,which meant that the gap of the detailed information questions' level was the biggest between the two classes.(3)SSR could improve students' language knowledge use.The students in the experimental class got a higher score in the Sustained Silent Reading,they would get a higher score in language knowledge use part of the post-test.The students whose scores were below fifteen in the experimental class were less 2people than control class.The students whose scores were between 15 and 25 in the experimental class were less 4 people.The students whose scores were between 25 and 35 in the experimental class were more2 people.The students whose scores were between 35 and 45 in the experimental class were more 4 people.Comparing with the control class,the experimental class had more students in the high scores' stage and less students' in the low scores' stage.So the scores have been improved.
