An Analysis Of Linguistic Features Of Thai Students' Master And Ph.d.Theses Of Humanities And Social Sciences

Linguistic features of Chinese academic discourses are complicated and comprehensive contents of research.Based on self-built corpus,the article quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed Thai students' Master and Ph.D.theses of humanities and social sciences by utilizing Douglas Biber' s multidimensional analysis,Feng Shengli' s feature checking algorithm for degree of formalities and linguistic features of Chinese academic discourses suggested by other researchers.As the result of the research shows,linguistic features of Chinese academic discourses of Ph.D.theses are different with those of Master theses in a certain extent,while the differences between theses of humanities and theses of social sciences are much more obvious.However,the result conducted by a small numbers of self-built corpus is not coherent with academic linguistic features of Chinese.Ph.D.students with higher levels of Chinese applied more words and expressions with image color.The reason of this phenomenon may related with different subjects of theses.By means of analysis mentioned above,the author expect that the thesis could systematically conclude linguistic features of academic discourses in Thai students' Master and Ph.D.theses and theses of humanities and social sciences separately,thus to provide specific and practical suggestions for Thai students in their process of theses writing.Meanwhile,the author also expect that the thesis could enhance pertinence and effectiveness in teaching of writing,in order to make it more effective for foreign students to complete their theses.The thesis is divided into eight chapters.Chapter one is the introduction,which mainly introduced the origin of the research.Chapter two is the literature review,which summarized domestic and foreign articles in analysis of linguistic features of academic discourses.Chapter three briefly introduced research methods applied in the thesis.Chapter four to Chapter six statistically analyzed Thai students' Master and Ph.D.theses of humanities and social sciences,which based on basic data,multidimensional analysis and feature checking algorithm for degree of formalities.Chapter seven is the additional research,which conducted comparative analysis on linguistic features between final drafts and raw materials of Master and Ph.D Theses of Humanities.Chapter eight is the conclusion,which provided related suggestions of teaching in theses writing of Master and Ph.D.of humanities and social sciences.
