A Study On The Mixquiahuala Letters From The Perspective Of Multimodal Functional Stylistics

Science and Technology changed our world and everything around us can not always keep their own style,and the same is the writing style.When novels change through ages,we can not read the novels in traditional ways and review literary works merely from linguistics perspective anymore.In another word,the various multimodal features in the novel should be concerned in the literary criticism,such as typographic features,prominent space and margin,layout,insets,deviated structures and vocabularies.The Multimodal Functional Stylistics is the best way for analyzing as it offers a new direction in the novel analysis for readers to study literary works from multi-perspectives.As there are a lot of distinguishing multimodal features in the novel The Mixquiahuala Letters.Therefore,the author chooses the Multimodal Functional Stylistics as a foundation of novel analysis.This thesis mainly adopts qualitative analysis complemented by quantitative analysis to make a detailed analysis of the multimodal features of The Mixquiahuala Letters,from the following aspects: Typography,Metafunctions,Transitivity,Epistolary Narration,Language characteristics and Space Movement.In the analysis,the author construe italics,bold words,capitals,punctuation,margin and space of pages from metafunctions theories,analyzed the letter ‘i’ which stands for the narrator of the novel from Transitivity System and Typography theory,explained the special meaning of Castillo’s epistolary narration,and explored the mixed languages and irregular space movement in The Mixquiahuala Letters.The author has discovered that Castillo especially concerns about a variety of multimodal elements in The Mixquiahual Letters,and these multimodal features contain the typographic features,peculiar language,narrative forms,space movement and so forth,which is closely related to the theme of the novel,the interactions between the narrator and main characteristics or the writer and readers,the ideologies and motivations of the writer’s creation work,etc.Castillo is good at manipulating these irregular forms to express the peculiar meanings and send the readers many extra information.She tends to employ peculiar forms of words and structures to deliver her ideas.At last,from the analysis of multimodal features in this novel,the author summarized many regulations of multimodal elements,which may also be referenced in other novel criticism and multimodal discourse analysis.
