The design of teaching objectives is of crucial importance in high school English teaching.Previous studies focused on frameworks and principles of teaching objectives as well as the problems and reasons of designing teaching objectives;few studies focused on the process of designing teaching objectives.This paper investigates high school novice English teachers' design of teaching objectives by adopting interview and think-aloud protocols.Six participants from different high schools in a western city in China joined in the study.The study reveals that participants did not pay enough attention to the design of classroom teaching objectives,and that the teaching objectives they designed cannot be achieved in the classroom.The participants show indifference to teaching objectives;the inaccuracy and lack of standardisation in writing teaching objectives and organisational factors are all influencing the process of designing teaching objectives.It is suggested that novice English teachers take students' learning needs into consideration and design measurable and hierarchical teaching objectives.
