In December 2017,the author participated in a project to translate a corporate acquisition report supporting Wolong Electric Group's decision to acquire General Electric Small Industrial Motor company. This report will analyze the problems that the author encountered during the translation project and provide solutions based on the"Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation"(CEA)framework proposed by Li Changshuan and Shi Xiaojing in their book "Meaning and Expression:Annotated Texts in Chinese-English Translation." The solutions and methods provided by the author are supported by examples that demonstrate the challenges of translating a corporate acquisition report in particular. For problems related to comprehension, the author discusses the following methods:"intratextual investigation," intertextual investigation, consulting a professional, and background research.Examples are provided to demonstrate the proper way to utilize these four methods. For problems related to expression, the author provides four methods for overcoming four distinct categories of expression-related challenges. These methods include"reverse translation," syntactical reorganization, methods for translating run-on Chinese sentences, and keeping a translation log.For problems that require adaptation, the author discusses the proper methods for identifying and correcting source text errors as well as the proper way to strike a balance between adaptation and accuracy. The author concludes by summarizing his findings, highlighting the importance of comprehension for translators translating text written in a second language, and indicating that the expression and adaptation stages of translation can be completed in any order or simultaneously.
