On Gia-fu Feng And Jane English's Co-translation Of Tao Te Ching And Its Reception In English Speaking Countries

With the growth of China's economy and comprehensive national strength,cultural exchanges and dialogues between China and other countries have deepened.As an indispensable part of the campaign to enhance China's soft power,the dissemination of Chinese culture and literature has been emphasized.In the new era,translation,as a bridge for cross-cultural communication,should play an important role in introducing Chinese literature to the world.Tao Te Ching,the corner stone of the Taoist culture,has been translated into English since the late Ming Dynasty and received wide acclaim in the English-speaking world in the 20th century,during which a large number of Tao Te Ching's translations have been published in the United States.Gia-fu Feng and Jane English's translation is the best-selling one.Since the "Cultural Turn" in the 1980s,research on translation is no longer confined to the text itself.It has shifted to the level of cross-cultural communication.Studies on translation's acceptance and influence in the target language have gained wider attention.Based on Harold Dwight Lasswell's "5W" communication model,this thesis analyses the translation of Feng Gia-fu and Jane English from five dimensions including the translators,contents,dissemination's channels,readers and its impacts.Through the analysis,this thesis aims to provide new ideas for the introduction of Chinese culture and literature to the world.
