In the era of globalization, communications across borders increasingly involve people around the world. More and more countries have realized the importance of international communication. As many communication studies scholars have pointed out, the effect of communication is the most important in the whole communication course. The translation of the original transcript could greatly influence the effect of international communication. To some extent, the translation of international communication materials is quite different of the translation of other genres. Lots of changes have to be made according to various communication goals. Although scholars and researchers in the fields of communication studies and translation studies have noticed this issue, little has been done to find the possible translation strategies that could be used in this field. What is the current translation practice like in the international communication course? What kind of translation strategies could be regarded as effective? What can we do with the translation to improve the effect of Chinese international communication? The present thesis endeavors to answer such questions. It starts with literature review on relevant studies in communication studies, cultural studies as well as the relationships between communication and translation. Some certain translation theories and the findings of the researches on translation issue in international communication field are also introduced. Based on these, a design of a comparative study on the Chinese and English versions of the journal China Today is proposed. Through the detailed analysis of the differences and similarities of the translation of the Chinese versions into the English counterpart, the author examines the translation of the news titles and bodies in which four special varied translation strategies are identified. For each translation strategy, the author also discusses the context it could be used and the specific communication needs for which it should be used. Lots of examples are provided for clearer illustration. According to the information and data collected, it is concluded that: 1) The translation of the news titles is of crucial importance. Frequently, the news titles have to be translated into quite different forms. 2) The translation of the openings and closings also has to undergo great changes. 3) In order to achieve better communication effects, the four varied translation strategies have to be used in combination. The topics of the news reports also ask for different translation strategies. Besides, the implications and limitations of this research are also suggested.
