Science fiction has gradually become attractive to Chinese people, but previous studies on science fiction translation are quite limited. The translation of science fiction demands high-quality rendering, for it is important for the development and sales volume of science fiction in the Chinese market and even in the world. This thesis aims to expound the translation strategies and techniques of science fiction under the guidance of four translation steps of Hermeneutic Theory by George Steiner: trust, aggression, incorporation and restitution, taking the author's translation practice, the E-C translation of Mind Games,as an example.Literature research, contrast, induction and exemplification are used in the thesis.Firstly, the thesis reviews current researches on science fiction translation at home and the relevant translation theories abroad by literature research, and makes a brief introduction of Hermeneutic Theory and Steiner's four translation steps of Hermeneutic Theory.Secondly, through induction, the textual features of science fiction and the language characteristics of this translation practice text are summarized. Finally, through methods of exemplification, contrast and induction, and under the guidance of Steiner's four translation steps of Hermeneutic Theory, translation techniques of science fiction translation classified by lexical, syntactic and textual level are illustrated through the specific instances in the translation practice. The author finds that the four translation steps of Hermeneutic Theory by Steiner provide significant guidance to this translation practice, none of which is dispensable.Only by using these four steps as a guide to science fiction translation, keeping the balance of them and employing the effective translation techniques can the translator produce ideal rendering. The thesis hopes to offer some reference to science fiction translators.
